[edit]POV of somewhat cranky conservative critic of Jaffa. What is needed instead is a competent summary of Jaffa's work, with attention to his disputes with the leading lights of the American historical profession, and a paragraph (at most) on his disputes with fellow conservatives. The web links are a bad joke.
- I see in the current version a paragraph on disputes with other scholars and a paragraph about disputes with conservatives. Also, what makes the weblinks a bad joke? Thanks, -Willmcw 21:09, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)
- I concur. There are paragraphs on some of Jaffa's disputes, but I don't see anything that's a POV violation. Since the poster who placed this here has not returned or specified any changes he thinks are needed, the tag should be removed shortly. Rangerdude 02:30, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)
What is the definition of a neoconservative, and what is the evidence that Mr Jaffa is a neoconservative as opposed to a paleoconservative? I'm removing Neo pending someone providing a reputable source that defines neoconservative and that Mr Jaffa satisfies the criteria.StreamingRadioGuide 22:56, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Birthdate
[edit][1]reference to birthdate
- and how about some material on his personal background, where was he born and where did he grow up etc.? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.181.172.225 (talk) 17:22, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
- I'm actually looking for that type of information, but have not come across it yet. Scholar999 (talk) 01:09, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
Revamp
[edit]This article is in need of a facelift. I'm thinking about completely reorganizing the intro, excluding everything but the most basic information. For example, Jaffa's work with Barry Goldwater could be a new section, and his connection to West Coast Straussians should be too. As far as the text, we need a comprehensive list of his works, essays, and any speeches, like the Goldwater one, to include. We also need to highlight his work on Abraham Lincoln (Crisis of the House Divided, and A New Birth of Freedom) along with the debates he's had with Thomas DiLorenzo (Von Mises follower?) and the others already listed in the article. PLEASE give me some feedback! JeanValJean redux (talk) 13:41, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hey JeanValJean, well I am happy to have stumbled upon this page. After having read some of his books, I definitely agree that the page in its current format is a bit inadequate, so a facelift would be much appreciated. It seems like a daunting task though. I think what we could use a scholarship section (or perhaps multiple to highlight the different topics he highlights), his participation in politics (working with Goldwater being an example), a section on debates he has had, and last, but not least, a background section would be a bit helpful as well. Scholar999 (talk) 21:10, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
List of publications
[edit]I'm compiling a list of his writings. There are some listed on claremont.org and amazon.com. Any help compiling that list would be appreciated. Tommyboy1215 (talk) 13:12, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
- I'm slowly getting a list together as well. I figure I'll start posting his works in its own section for now, but it will likely be incomplete considering his vast body of work and my lack of time. Scholar999 (talk) 19:38, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- I noticed that some of his writings have been moved. The current link to the Intelligent Design one is here: www.claremont.org/basicPageArticles/jaffa-on-intelligent-design/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.148.235.6 (talk) 16:46, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
"The Truth About Leo Strauss"
[edit]This book appears to have the best summary of Jaffa's work along with his disputes with other scholars. JeanValJean redux (talk) 14:10, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
"Lincoln Studied" Section
[edit]In this section, Jaffa's "most noted book" is mentioned, but is not really expanded upon. Considering the fact that is his most noted book, should we consider placing a few of the most prominent points briefly within this section?Scholar999 (talk) 17:17, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Jaffa-DiLorenzo Debate
[edit]I am really liking the layout of the page, I went ahead and moved some of the information that did not fit in the "Jaffa-DiLorenzo Debate" would to the "Lincoln debated" section. I only moved the information that does not deal with that debate itself. Scholar999 (talk) 01:42, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
Problem: This section, on the Jaffa/DiLorenzo debate, is interesting and informative. However, as another reader (see Rich comment, below) has already pointed out, the presentation is one-sided. It only presents a summary of Jaffa's views, and has nothing about DiLorenzo's responses. I think that the real problem is that a detailed discussion of this debate doesn't really belong in the Jaffa article. Jaffa lived a very long and productive life; his debate with DiLorenzo was less than 2 hours' worth of nine decades. The debate is an interesting public document (available on YouTube), but it was hardly a crucial element of Jaffa's career.
Suggestion: There are several other major Wikipedia articles that deal philosophically with debates about Lincoln, secession, the Civil War, the election of 1860, etc. This debate summary belongs in one of those articles. The summary should be expanded to include DiLorenzo's points, and the whole thing should be moved to another article. The Jaffa article should link to it.
If anyone likes this idea, I'll be happy to do the work.Apruzan (talk) 20:43, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Debates -- Balance
[edit]If the details of the debates are going to be presented, then the counter points should be presented. Otherwise the section is simply a soapbox for Jaffa's views. – S. Rich (talk) 18:16, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

No controversies
[edit]Jaffa courted controversy, particularly on gay issues, at least according to The Nation. No mention in the article...? Cleopatran Apocalypse (talk) 19:23, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
This 1988 article ("Humanizing Certitudes and Impoverishing Doubts") in particular contains shockingly vicious anti-gay sentiments: https://web.archive.org/web/20110809221904/https://interpretationjournal.com/backissues/Vol_16-1.pdf
